Do Androids…..?

Tokyo Science Museum

Been doing a lot of reading up on robotics and haptic technologies over the last month or so for several stories I’m working on.

Interesting. The age of robots is really here.

Should we be afraid?

Look at the picture above and you tell me.

Then look at this article and think some more.

I don’t think we should be afraid. This isn’t like some sci-fi movie where all the robots rebel and overthrow us. We have complete control over anything and everything they do. This is just my opinion and I hope it doesn’t come across as rude.

Those videos are amazing especially the man like robot. As long as we have control of the on/off switch we have nothing to fear. Mac

  3. Not at all rude. That line was more of a joke and as you can see the image of the robot I posted is seriously cute. I have researched a lot on the subject of haptics, lovotics and telepresence and interviewed some leading professors in the field and the future all sounds wonderfully mixed up and interesting. We will be interacting with robots on many levels and even seeing them as leaders in some fields but also using technology to create, or rather recreate, closer more intimate relationships with our one Diasporic species. Will be fantastic I think. Can’t seem to find any publishers concentrating on this subject at the moment and I am rather too busy to finish the pieces I am writing and shooting to get them all done and dusted ready to be published yet but I am enjoying learning about this.

  4. Mac, that has been the overwhelming message from the research and interviews I have done. We do have the ultimate control. Approximations of love or hate can be programmed into a robot but they are not real emotions regardless of how smart the robot gets and how many levels of deduction it can compute it cannot feel what it has not been programmed to represent. It cannot even feel what it has been programmed to show; it just acts it for our benefit, using language that we pick up on consciously and as the technology increases even sub consciously. Simply we will not be killed by robots unless someone has programmed that ability into one. That aside the fears of the robotic future are currently real because the technology is very new and it direction is as unpredictable as our own ambitions. The point of references most people can judge from is limited to Science Fiction and that is overwhelmingly negative because it is just more entertaining that way.
