Scared of the sea

I`m scared of the sea, it is just too big to feel comfortable in. The picture above is by Asako Narahashi from a series called half awake and half asleep in the water. She is not a great swimmer, so she says, and feels a fear when she is in the water just like me which makes this series of interesting landscapes particularly impressive.

The Japanese coast can be depressingly ugly at times, smothered in tetrapods or lined with expressways and stacked up hotels. The glimpses of Japan you get from her half drowned; dreamlike and surprisingly claustrophobic images makes it all seem very interesting though. Of course Mount Fuji is always beautiful to look at but can you feel the fear? And can you see the duplicitous anchor of familiar, safe land in the bridge to the right? Enjoy.

Very clever picture! I haven’t seen her picture. She is so smart as to find such an ingenious way to trim a scene. Interesting.

  2. It`s great isn`t it but a little claustophobic, the waves seem big and scary from that angle and always have me looking for dry land as a point of reference for and safety. And I always find it which says something important I think but I haven`t decided what yet.
